RNIB Sensing Culture Launch Event

The Heritage Lottery Funded project will develop tools, exhibitions and skills to assist five museums and collections in the South East become more accessible to blind and partially sighted visitors. As well as the Conan Doyle Collection, Booth Museum of Natural History, the Beaney, Lewes Castle and the Oxford University Museum of Natural History will take part in the project.

Sensing Culture was officially launched at Trinity House in London on the 11th of February. Representatives from four of the five participating heritage organizations shared displays and samples from their collections and sites. Visitors were invited to handle objects, interact with test models, and see early work from the various sites.

The Conan Doyle Collection is developing a small, travelling exhibition with audio description and tactile elements as well as a number of handling objects. Displayed at the launch were prototype information boards with sound spots, schematics of handling objects and an example of 3D printing provided by the University of Portsmouth. We were also proud to display tactile images provided by the RNIB's Tactile Mapping department.
