After the publication of his first 2 novels A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four, Conan Doyle shifted his focus to writing short stories. One of these, The Voice of Science was published in the third issue of the new Strand magazine in March 1891. The Strand Magazine was a monthly magazine published between 1891 and 1950.
Conan Doyle had a long relationship with the magazine and in July 1891 the first of 12 monthly Sherlock Holmes stories A Scandal in Bohemia was published. The following stories were published monthly until June 1892. These stories were subsequently published in book form as The Adventures of Sherlock Homes. Conan Doyle's third Sherlock Holmes novel The Hound of the Baskervilles was also published in the Strand Magazine in serial form from August 1901 to April 1902,
